Over 650 native grasses and sedges planted
Riddells Creek/Bruce St Revegetation Project
Led by Macedon and Mt Macedon Landcare, this project focused on restoring a section of Riddells Creek to improve ecosystem health and raise awareness of the importance of waterways.
Volunteers from the Landcare committee joined students, parents and staff from Macedon Primary School, alongside a local weed removal contractor and an ecologist from Melbourne Water. Together, they removed invasive wees and planted over 650 native grasses and sedges.
An exciting ecological discovery
A key educational highlight from the project was a session led by Richard Akers from Melbourne Water, where grade 6 students learned to collect and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates, understand the role of waterways as biolinks, and assess waterway health. This immersive, hands-on experience led the group to an exciting discovery…
“We were thrilled to discover we have 3 out of the top 4 very sensitive macro invertebrates present in significant numbers. This indicates a very healthy waterway. Projects like this provide an opportunity for community groups like MMM Landcare to connect with younger members of the community in an immersive educational experience that benefits everyone.”
Part of the Council Biolink Boost grants program
This project was co-funded with Macedon Ranges Shire Council as part of their Biolink Boost grants program, which helps groups achieve strategic biodiversity outcomes and empowers our community to tackle projects in their local area.
