Supporting at-risk youth in our community
For more than a decade, the Gisborne Men's Shed has been making a positive difference in the lives of local young people through its Young Shedmen program. Designed to support at-risk male youth, the program provides practical skills, mentorship and encouragement, helping participants build confidence, develop positive behaviours and stay engaged with education.
With support from Community Bank Gisborne & District, the Men's Shed has expanded its capabilities through the purchase of a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine, opening up new learning opportunities for both young people and shed members.
Bringing new technology into the workshop
The CNC machine introduces participants to modern manufacturing processes, machinery operation and computer programming. Students involved in the Young Shedmen program can gain hands-on experience with technology that is increasingly used across a range of industries, helping to build valuable skills for future employment and further education.
The equipment also allows the Men's Shed to broaden the range of projects it can undertake, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology.
Supporting young people through mentorship
The Young Shedmen program is about much more than learning practical skills. Through regular interaction with experienced volunteers, participants benefit from mentorship, guidance and positive role models in a welcoming and supportive environment.
The program has evolved over time to meet the needs of local young people, including creating mentoring opportunities for past participants and providing safe, meaningful connections for those facing challenges at home or school.
Strengthening the wider community
Beyond its youth programs, the Gisborne Men's Shed makes a significant contribution to the local community. Members regularly undertake projects that support local organisations, repair and restore community assets, assist at local events and fundraise for important causes.
From building equipment for aged care facilities and supporting local markets, to fundraising for food relief and providing a meeting place for community groups, the Men's Shed continues to create positive social connections and practical outcomes across the region.
Investing in a stronger future
The CNC machine is more than just a new piece of equipment. It is an investment in learning, innovation and community connection. By helping young people develop new skills while enabling volunteers to continue supporting local projects, the initiative ensures the Gisborne Men's Shed can continue making a meaningful impact for years to come.
